Nordtreat is proud to be a partner in the BIOSAFIRE project, a European R&D initiative focused on developing safer, more sustainable materials to improve fire resistance.
BIOSAFIRE (Biobased Sustainable Additives for Fire Resistance) aims to harness the natural fire-retardant properties of lignin and tannins, upgrading them into high-performance biobased additives suitable for industrial use. The project brings together 22 partners across Europe to develop and manufacture new flame retardant materials with up to 80% biobased content matching the performance of conventional, often toxic, chemical fire retardants.
Starting from existing pilot-scale technologies, BIOSAFIRE will upscale and diversify these renewable feedstocks to produce flame retardants for five applications across four sectors: naval, railway, household goods and wood coatings.
The project will demonstrate these materials in real-world use cases and deliver a portfolio of solutions alongside practical processing guidelines, accelerating the replacement of traditional flame retardants with safer, greener alternatives.
